A Little Machine Embroidery Applique

Wreath-+-Swag
I was able to get a little MEA done in the last 10 days, mainly finishing up the testing of some block designs. When you have designs that can be stitched in multiple sizes of hoops, you have to keep testing out the files in all the various hoop sizes, so before you know it, they are kind of multiplying and you end up with tons of a given type of block.  Here’s a Christmasy version of this appliqued wreath:

8.5-in-wreath
That’s actually from a couple of years ago.  These wreaths are a single applique shape that were cut on my Sizzix machine using the Appli-K-Kutz 8 1/2 inch Wreath Die.  Here’s another version of the same applique shape, but it has a different edge finishing stitch as well as an internal design:

8_5-xmas
(Ignore the white lines; those are soap marks I use for registration lines when I float my fabric in the hoop.  They are now history!)  Here’s the same wreath with a different internal design but same edge finishing stitch:

8_5wreath2
…and here’s an example of the same internal design as above but with the candle wicking edge finishing stitch:

8_5-wreath-3-candle

…and here’s what it looks like if you only add that internal design to one side of the wreath:

8.5-in-one-sided-curley-cue

And here’s another internal design!  This time, the internal design is a series of one-sided feathers inside each plume:

8_5-wreath-plumes

These wreaths are multiplying!  The shot below isn’t even all of them, but I think this grouping will make a nice quilt with the blocks set on point:

8_5-end
I see some fun ruler work in those spaces between wreaths…!

A few weeks ago, we had a DVD give-away if people could guess what my next big announcement would be.  Many of you guessed that the pending announcement would be that I had a new Craftsy class about to debut.  THAT announcement back then was about our new DVD release of “Ruler Work for the Sit-Down Quilter Vol 1.”  Today, I’m happy to say that today’s announcement is for my new Craftsy class called “Ultimate Free Motion Feathers!”

This class isn’t quite ready to debut yet, but it’s coming really soon, like in about 1 1/2 weeks.  I am happy to say that if you’ve already seen all 4 of our DVDs on feathers, or read our book called Feather Adventures, there will be some new info here so it will be worth your time and money.  I’m excited about this class because I think you will really, really, like it!  So, beginning right now, we’re having a give-away of this class and to enter you need to post a comment to this blog posting telling me what kinds of things, in the world of quilting and machine embroidery, you are interested in learning going forward.  I am hoping to use your comments to get an idea of what topics/skills you are hoping to learn/develop, so share, share and share your ideas!  Please spread the word to all your friends as well and be sure to post your comment/entry to this blog post  by 11:50 PM EDST on Sunday, Oct  11th, 2015.

This has been probably the craziest/busiest last 2 months of my life in a long time and I haven’t had a whole lot of time to quilt myself.  Sometimes we have to get vicarious thrills by looking at stunning quilting by others and I am a total sucker for this kind of “eye candy.”  In case you haven’t had the good fortune to check out this blog, I’m going to give you 2 links that will get your heart beating fast.  This first link will take you to a specific blog post of Kelly Cline’s where she quilts a top composed of 20 hankies and the result is stunning!  Here’s the link to that post.  Next up is a link to Kelly Cline’s blog because you’re going to want to follow this talented quilter going forward because her work is lovely!  Here’s the link to her blog home page.

Ruler Feet Update

It is so nice to have such a positive response to our DVD called “Ruler Work for the Sit-Down Quilter!”  This is such a fun technique and it really can transform your quilting.  I’m receiving a lot of questions about ruler feet.  We are pretty much all in the same boat here, because very few machine manufacturers have come out with ruler feet, so we’re all looking to improvise.  I really can only give advise about what I’ve tried myself, but we just posted a new YouTube video that shows how I was able to use 5 different ruler feet on my Brnina 830, and none of the 5 was designed to be used on the Bernina 830!  I hope this gives some of you hope that you can find a foot that works because you probably can!  I am personally quite fond of the Westalee feet now and found that I could use the low, medium, and high shank Westalee ruler feet on my 830.  We have begun selling all 3 sizes in our online store and you can find them by clicking here.

Here’s the video on ruler feet for the Bernina 830:
